signed oil on canvas Dutch landscape painting. This painting measures 24 x 35 ½ inches and is in very good condition with minor craquelure and the canvas is not stretched as tightly as it should be. This is a very nice original work of art.
Willem Hendrik van Norden. Henry Wilhelm (William) of Norden ( Amsterdam , July 13 1883 - Laren , September 26 1978 ) was a Dutch artist and designer . Van Norden was born in 1883 as the son of a carpenter Amsterdam. At age 15 he joined the faience factory Thistle of Jacob Lob as an apprentice painter. He was in the company trained by painters such as Cornelis de Bruin , Fred Jansen and the artistic director of the Thistle, Bert Nienhuis . Norden seized the opportunity to study at in the evenings Teekenschool of Arts Crafts and then at the State Academy of Fine Arts , where he met the sculptor Jan Bronner . Van Norden was in his working life member of several artists' associations such as the Association Saint Luke in Amsterdam, the Dutch Association of Craftsmen and Industrial Arts (VANK), Art It Our Goal in Haarlem and Gouda art society Burgvliet. At Thistle made from Norden career, in 1902 he became a designer and in 1911 he followed Nienhuis as artistic director. Norden also regularly worked for himself or on behalf of other companies. In 1922 Thistle was acquired by Goedwaagen in Gouda. Norden was at Goedewaagen artistic director of the new decorative pottery. He moved with his family in 1923 to Gouda. Goedewaagen went under his leadership until 1929 by producing decorative pottery called Thistle . Van Norden would continue into old age associated with Goedewaagen. In 1961, he stopped at the age of 78 with his work for this company. Then he continues his work as an artist Norden designs include multiple tile panels. The tableau of Amsterdam brewery "The Crowned Falcon" is located in the Dutch Tile Museum in Otterlo. In 1925 he designed a tea set that his name was "Van Norden" . Other work by Van Norden is included in the collections of Museum Gouda and Royal Goedewaagen. Norden married on December 24, 1913 in Amsterdam Jewish Bets Hakkert. His wife was arrested in 1944 and from Amersfoort to Westerbork transported. She knew to be released and survived World War II. In 1969 Van Norden and his wife took up residence in the Rosa Spier house in Laren. Norden remained there as an artist active. He exhibited at that time not only in the Rosa Spier House, but also in Amsterdam. From their marriage four children were born. Their son Wim was later director of Parool . Son Hans and his daughter Josine were an artist, and daughter Hilda and her daughter Evelyne . Grandson Arthur writes stories Dikkie Dik in the illustrations Jet Boeke . Grandson Martin is a musician. Van Norden died in 1978 at age 95 in his hometown of Laren.
