Description
Vtg H. Ten Hoeven - Dutch Artist European Cobblestone Street with Green cart & man, people and tall buildings in background, Oil on CanvasH. ten Hoven (1901-1978) was a twentieth-century artist based in the Netherlands who specialized in
picturesque landscapes featuring city life in Amsterdam. Scenes of canals, flower markets, and quaint
backstreets are common themes found in his work. The artist signed his works with the surname
"Hoeven" as well as "Hoven."
The subject work is a vertical landscape portraying a backstreet lined with cobblestones, with houses of
varying proportion and design. A group of pedestrians and a horse-drawn cart are seen in the distance.
The painting is executed with loose, Impressionistic brushwork in a largely restricted palette of brown,
yellow, orange, green, and blue tones.
on a tag on the back it says
H. Van Hoeven
Born 1901 Delft Holland comes from a long line of family of artist. His talent manifested itself rather early & he loved fine arts so no question arose to his profession. His career developed smoothly. He graduated with honors from the Royal Academy of fine arts in Amsterdam where he teachs today (this was written many years ago). His native town Delft, famous for the old dutch houses were an early inspiration for the favored subject he was to paint later on. Scenes of the old streets are the subjects which are widely known in Holland and many other countries as his work, hardly surpasses in this particular subject by any contemporary. They are very much in demand.
