Early 1970s newspaper-layout ruler, long obsolete in determining the size of news headlines, the width and length of columns, placing ads.
It’s emblazoned with the name and phone number of the
Freeport Journal-Standard
in northern Illinois.
It is two feet (24 in) long, as marked on one edge, and on the other edge, 144 picas (a
unit of measurement used in typesetting). This edge also had red marks designating the width of columns, up to six columns across.
The reverse side is marked on one edge with Agate measurements, up to 335 units. Agate is the small type used in newspapers for sports box scores, for example.
Wooden ruler measures 25” x 1 5/16”.
Items are stored in a smoke-free environment.
