DESCRIPTION:
This is a lovely painting by listed 19th century artist Vincenzo D'Auria (1872- 1939.)  This painting is nicely executed and a lovely decorative item.  It is quite substantial in size with the painting itself measuring approximately 27 1/4" tall X 39" wide.  Measured in the frame, the total size of the painting is approximately 36" tall X 48" wide.  The frame itself is approximately 2" deep.  It is solid wood and appears to hand-carved.  I "think?" the back stamp on the frame reads "Made in Belgium."  I am fairly certain, but it isn't completely legible so that is why I say I "think."  The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner, "V. D'Auria."  I tried to capture it for you, but it didn't come out well because the signature fades into the dark background.  I assure you it is signed.  There is a small piece of paper affixed to the back of the frame  with the type written message, " "Roman artist - Studied under masters in Rome.  Specializing in boat and harbor scenes of Southern Italy.  Magnificent color harmony and his sky reflections on the water are expertly executed.  Exhibits in Roman galleries and United States."  This painting comes from the estate we are helping to down-size and we have been told by the owner that she thinks her parents purchased it from a gallery in Chicago.  They have had the painting since the 1950's at least and that's where they lived at the time.
**PLEASE NOTE CONDITION:
The painting looks to be in quite good overall condition.  I saw no holes, tears or damage to the canvas.  However, as would be expected of a painting this old, the back of the canvas has yellowed some with age.  The painting itself could probably benefit from a gentle clean by an expert as it has been hanging, unmoved, in the same spot for over 45 years.  I see minor age discoloration only so it could definitely be hung and enjoyed as is.  I looked for any age crazing/crackling to the paint and could not find any.  If there is some, it is very fine and I missed it.  It really looks very good.  The frame is in very good overall vintage condition too.  I saw a couple of small areas of gilt loss and one nick to the inside of the frame. There was one small area on the painting's edge almost inside the frame where I thought the paint may have chipped to note, but the more I look at it, the more I think it is just paint as it matches the color used in the painting and the rest of the painting is in such good shape.  I took a pic to show you anyway.  The brass cover on the frame light shows normal age wear such as darkening and some pitting, scratches etc. It is marked, "Firefly."  I don't know if the light still works or not, but the cord is as brittle as bone and needs to be re-corded for safety before use. It is seriously dried out and hard. Lots of pics for you to review!
