This is an oil painting reproduction of Rembrandt’s painting “Self Portrait as the Apostle St Paul (aged 55)”. It was hand painted with oil on canvas. It was stretched and framed, ready to hang.
We commissioned this painting in 2005 for our art gallery. This painting has been kept in our inventory since 2005. It has never been used.
Rembrandt was a prolific painter, draftsman, and etcher, he is considered the greatest artist of Holland's Golden Age.
Rembrandt made this self portrait when he was fifty-five years old. Rembrandt pictured himself in a total of about 80 paintings, etchings and drawings. He made most of these for himself as study material: to study a facial expression or to try out contrasts between light and shade. Sometimes he used himself as a “model” representing someone else. He has pictured himself as a biblical character, the apostle St Paul.
St Paul lived in the first century after the birth of Christ. He was born in Tarsus, now in Turkey, of Jewish parents. Rembrandt indicates his Eastern origins by picturing a turban. St Paul was first a fanatical persecutor of Christians. But he had a vision and converted. Since then, he spread the word of Christianity throughout the Mediterranean. He founded many Christian communities to whom he constantly wrote. In the painting, he is holding a number of these letters in his hand. The letters are addressed to the Ephesians.
Rembrandt pictured himself in a dark room. Throughout the green-grey background, Rembrandt has applied tiny points and strokes of bright yellow and pink. He has built up this painting, layer by layer, on top of dark ground. The paint has been applied thinly in the dark areas, such as his coat and the shadows in his face.
