About the Artist
:
Although born and raised in Brooklyn New York, Ritch became visually attracted to the west and the Native American culture by the warm colors and the spiritual nature of the people and the land. Inspired by the works of the legendary photographer Edward S. Curtis and his colleagues who chronicled Indian life in the 19th and 20th centuries, he became sympathetic to the Native American history and their fallen journey. He paints of the people, the land and the spirits and tries to recapture a feeling of a time and culture long gone.
He is an emerging self taught artist who has been painting for over twenty years and only recently began to exhibit publicly. Ritch has been awarded the Plainsman, the People's Choice Award at the American Plains Artists show in 2009.
Known for his evocative expression and emotion of the subject as well as his textured application of paint, Ritch is rapidly building a strong following with collectors and galleries throughout the world.
Artist Statement:
I am fascinated by the American west, the colors, the space, the culture and the history.
My paintings commemorate a west long gone. I tend towards an ethereal perspective to recapture a more serene time. My goal is to put the viewer, not only into another time and place, but also in the subject’s heart. Each painting tells a story: something has just happened or is about to. I try to capture the essence of the subject. An Indian may be staring out over an abyss, but to me he is representing a beautiful culture that may be looking back on its past and seeking its future. When I paint horses, they are always in motion, whether in a hard stampede or lounging at day’s end at the river bed. The subjects are always on a journey.
The paintings are primarily oils, occasionally enhanced with variety of mixed media including sand, to resonate with the ancient traditions. The paintings evolve: often starting with an idea, a photo or observing and interpreting.
Each painting is a journey; I have a general direction but allow the project meander naturally, rarely feeling bound to my original plan. This yields the most pleasurable and interesting work.
I frequently utilize texture, or impasto, which adds a third physical dimension to the work. But within the context of the painting, it also yields another sense of time and space, perhaps reminiscent of the relief found on cave walls. Sometimes I incorporate several themes such as horses emerging form within a stone wall or petroglyph to emphasize the impact of time and antiquity. Layers are a critical component to my paintings. Many of the initial layers are not directly seen by the viewer but come through as they affect the appearance of the uppermost layers. Color on color on color.
