    Description

Here is an extremely rare antique signed illustration painting of what appears to be a female rough rider from the Spanish-American War. Her collar reads "USV"; United States Volunteers. There were females in the USV during the Spanish-American War, but according to records they served as nurses. There are no known instances of woman soldiers during the Spanish-American War. The woman in this portrait/illustration is wearing a uniform very similar to Theodore Roosevelt's rough rider uniform, and she is holding a rifle. The cardboard/box backing on the reverse is part of an ad for the Bijou Theatre in NY, which opened in 1883 and was demolished in 1915, helping further to date the piece. If anyone has any information on the subject or history, would love to learn more. Dimensions: Frame, 12 1/2" by 14 1/2".
