Description

Ruth Ewart Muehlmeier, 1925 - 2019, was an important figure in Wisconsin art over many decades.  Among her activist activities and teaching stints, she taught at Layton School of Art and was President of Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors for many years.  She had traveled the world, studied and taught art history, had a broad understanding of art and its worth, and as this painting reveals was progressive in her own art production.  In addition she raised a large family and helped in the management of her family's large hotel business well into her 80's.  She was a good friend and role model for many, especially during decades when her skills and creative nature might not be so well appreciated.
(I was lucky to know and admire her.)
This watercolor was purchased at her last solo exhibition in the Delafield Art Gallery in 2012.  It was professionally framed at the time and remains in that frame.  You see the uncommon image of abstracted women on a sea shore with boats and fish.  The woman in the foreground is highly abstracted and "reconstructed", suggesting the influence of the world renowned Modernist artists preceding her time and of her time.  The painting is done on two pieces of watercolor paper joined by Ruth in the center, and it measures 20" x 26".  The light colored wood frame is of course a bit larger,  29" X 33", and it allows all the focus to be on that bold painting.  Plexiglas covers the work. I will personally sign the written statement which appears on the back support guaranteeing what I have stated here, that this is by Ruth, and its origin.  Check out my OTHER ITEMS/EBAY STORE.
