Man Smoking PipeAttributed to
Christian Andreas Schleisner
Biography from Auktionshaus Stahl
Danish history and portrait painter, Christian Andreas Schleisner studied at the Copenhagen academy under J. L. Lund and C. A. Jensen. In 1841 he joined the Danish artist's colony in Munich; in 1855 he was in Paris. Schleisner was member and professor at the Copenhagen academy.
Painting:
10-7/8” high by 6-7/8” wide
Frame:
13-1/4” high by 9-1/8” wide
Note: When I bought this painting around 18 years ago I took it being by Schleisner at face value.
I have taken a closer look.
It is a cut down painting.
The canvas we see from the back is the newer canvas upon which the painting is fastened.
This was done sometime post WWII given the discoloration of the damar varnish,
evidently in Denmark (frame construction),
.
It could be that this is from a larger Schleisner that had significant damage in parts.
This was a part that was saved.
