A member of American Abstract Artists, Mac Wells had solo exhibitions at A. M. Sachs, Aegis, Susan Caldwell, and Max Hutchinson Galleries, all in New York.  He was included in many other exhibitions, and is included in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, among several others.  He taught at Hunter College in New York, with a catalogued solo exhibition of his work there in 1996.
Mac Wells
began his studies at Cooper Union in New York, continuing after that with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Nahum Tschacbasov.  In 1967, he became a member of American Abstract Artists.  His early work explores the landscape and the view of it in abstract forms, moving from there to what he called his ""small planetary images" and "vertical board paintings."  His work evolved over time to very large, purely abstract canvases.  Wells exhibited his paintings widely, with solo exhibitions at the Aegis, A.M. Sachs, Susan Caldwell, and Max Hutchinson galleries, all in New York.  In 1993, he received an award from the Mark Rothko Foundation, sharing an exhibition with Tony Bechara, Carmen Herrera and Tom Murrin at Artists Space in New York.  His work has been acquired by numerous public collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, Wadsworth Athenaeum, Denver Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Columbus (Ohio) Museum of Fine Art.   Wells taught for more than thirty years at Hunter College, which held a solo exhibition of his work in 1996.
