Description
This listing is for one each of Gillott’s 170, 303, 404, and 659 nibs in new-old-stock mint unused condition. Boxes not included. Here's is THE nib set most recommended in the classic books on pen and ink drawing, while also being four of the most highly regarded nibs for calligraphy.
The definitive texts from Pennell, Guptill, Brown, et al, recommend four nibs above all others - Joseph Gillott's 170, 303, 404, and 659 crowquill. The nibs listed here were manufactured from the late 1800s to early 1900s when most of those texts were published, so they are the very same nibs the authors refer to, not the inferior models from later years. These nibs were all made in England from the finest steel by highly skilled workers. Nibs of this quality haven't been made for almost a century. They are all quite flexible but with the ideal resistance and "feel" so that a skilled user can control the line thickness instinctively. They're a joy to use, and together cover the full range of line qualities that most artists will need or desire. The 170, 303, and 404 will fit most standard penholders. The 659 requires a crowquill holder, like the ubiquitous Hunt holder that can be found at most art supply stores.
