    Guan Zilan
    -
    关紫兰
    (
    關紫蘭
1903 -1986), female, born in Shanghai, was an early oil painter in China.
Guan Zilan was born in an art family. Her parents run the textile industry. They have a fine art foundation and can design cotton patterns by themselves. When she was a teenager, she was admitted to the drawing course of Shanghai Shenzhou Girls' School. Hong Ye was the first teacher to teach Guan Zilan sketch and color. Later, Chen Boyi urged Guan Zilan to go to China University of the Arts for further study. Guan Zilan was admitted to the Western painting department of China Art University. In June 1927, China University of the Arts held a fine arts exhibition, Guan Zilan's work entitled "leisure" stood out in the exhibition, together with her own photo was published in "good friend" Pictorial, 1927, No. 17. [1] [2] [3]
In 1927, Guan Zilan graduated from Chinese Art University. In the same year, Guan Zilan was recommended by her teacher Chen Baoyi to study in Japan and was admitted to Tokyo Institute of Culture. During her study in Japan, she benefited from the oil painters Arijima Soma and Nakagawa Epochi who studied in France, and was deeply influenced by the French post-impressionist painting schools and fauvist painting styles, which laid a foundation for the formation of her later oil paintings. In August 1927, Guan Zilan's solo exhibition was held in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Her works have been exhibited in many exhibitions, such as the Japanese "Erke" Art Exhibition, the Ueno Art Exhibition and the Hyogo Prefecture Art Exhibition. Japanese magazines have published articles about Guan Zilan and her works for many times, and give them high evaluation. [1] [2] [3]
Guan Zilan was one of the earliest professional oil painters in China who was influenced by Fauvism. In the early 20th century, soon after the emergence of fauvism, it became widespread in Japan. Guan Zilan had studied under Chen Baoyi before she went to Japan and had a deeper understanding of Fauvism after she went to Japan. Guan Zilan's works from the 1920s to the 1940s have a modern art trend, for the modern Romantic school. [1] [2]
In 1930, guan zilan participated in the Japanese exhibition oil painting "daffodil" was printed by hyogo prefectural government into postcards, issued nationwide in Japan. In the same year, Guan Zilan returned to China and taught at Shanghai Tieyang Art Academy. In the summer of the same year, Guan Zilan held a solo exhibition in Hua 'an Building, Shanghai, which attracted the attention of the Chinese painting circle and was praised as the "Chinese lady painter". [1] [2]
In order to pursue her painting career, Guan Zilan postponed marriage many times until she was 35 years old. After giving birth to her daughter, Guan Zilan chose to be silent for a period of time. Silence after 10 years, 1941 Guan Zilan held a painting exhibition again. In the 1940s, someone commented: "Her works, unlike Rolanshan's, only show the beauty of women, but also reveal the fragility of women. She does have the color like a gem, the warm picture like velvet, and the lively brush strokes like a bird. However, the strong and magnificent composition peculiar to men has long been present in her pictures.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Guan Zilan lived in Hongkou District of Shanghai. After her husband's death in 1958, she did not paint often. In 1963, she became a member of the Shanghai Institute of Literature and History. She is also a member of the Chinese Artists Association. In the 1960s, Guan Zilan's hair was greying, but she kept her beauty well groomed. [2] [3]
During the Cultural Revolution, Guan Zilan stopped painting. She was heartbroken, but still confident about life. She often goes to the Dedaxi Restaurant and Donghai West Restaurant on Nanjing East Road in Huangpu District for coffee. Sometimes when in the mood, I would go to Shanghai Cafe on Tongren Road, Jing 'an District for a cup of espresso. [2]
During the People's Republic of China period, many of Guan Zilan's works were collected by the National Art Museum of China. In 1983, his work "Violet" was exhibited in the 30th anniversary collection exhibition of Shanghai Institute of Literature and History. In 1995, his work "woman of the republic of China" was exhibited in a retrospective exhibition of oil painting in Shanghai. In March 1998, her works were exhibited in the "Century Women Art Exhibition" in Beijing. [1]
In her old age, she went to Siweimei barbershop on the corner of Changchun Road, Hongkou District every month to have her hair cut, often with imported perfume, maintaining an elegant, beautiful and positive attitude towards life. She thinks the fashionable "eulogizing" works are nothing but rubbish. Before her death, she lived in No. 1, Lane 1333, Liyang Road, Hongkou District. [1] [2]
