Russell, not to be confused w/ Charles Russell Martin or Charles Russell Loomis, American painters who were also active watercolorists & landscape painters of that same period. This W/C painting is still in its orig period gold gilt frame w/gold painted mat board. The scene is of a grouping of white birch trees nestled together on a grassy bluff above a river or pond. The leaves & grasses have an autumnal palette & the scene is one of welcoming fall & the transition to the colder temperatures & snow of winter. The painting was taken out to inspect the paper & the W/C appears to have been laid down on another piece of paper, which looks to be archival & possibly prepared far later to protect the painting from the pine backing boards. The work is signed 'C. Russell' & dated 1895. Absolutely gorgeous.
