Description
This scene depicts a boat with tall sails on the ocean. I don’t recognize the location and am not certain if the low land areas on each side of that boat are small islands or instead the front edges of a bay with an opening behind the exiting ship as it sails to open waters. It is also possible that the dark land on the left side may not be an island at all but just an extension of the coastline as there does seem to be a light color further in the background which might be a continuation of the coast down to lighter color hillsides where the land then extends to the right in the direction of the middle of the painting. The painting has the name of the artist painted in the lower right corner. Although the writing is of moderate size, I can’t quite discern what it I. The first letter appears to be “g” but other choices could be “j” or “y”. The second letter probably is an “a” or maybe but less likely an “o” followed by “r” or even an “n”. The final letters look to be “son” resulting in Garson or Garnon of something such as Yarson, but when glancing at some art reference texts I did not find any likely candidates under those versions of a last name. If the artist name is important to a purchaser, he or she will have to do a better job than I did deciphering this artist’s name. Following the name is the number 70 which I assume means the work was created in 1970.The painting was executed in oil. The rear of the painting is covered with black backing paper which is complete except for a small hole which seems to show thin cardboard between the backing paper and the actual back of the painting. Although I have not removed the backing paper, my guess is that the painting is on canvas panel or if just on canvas is stretched tightly to a wood stretcher and feels taught when touched by my fingertip. The visible portion of the painting from the front measures 11 1/2 inches high by 15 1/2 inches wide. The painting is in a wood stretcher or wood spacer which in turn is inserted in a wood frame with outside frame edges which measure approximately 16 15/16 inches high by 20 15/16 inches wide.
The condition of the painting is good with no holes, depression or indentation marks, no scratches, chips, stains or other obvious flaws. The stretcher or wood spacer which surrounds the painting has a narrow (maybe 1/4" inch or so) wood inner edge with a bright gold surface finish. The remainder of the stretcher or spacer front surface has a black felt like material on it in good condition. The wood frame which holds the painting and stretcher or spacer slopes upward with a pattern of adjacent shapes which are oval but close to circular occupying most of the space on each of the four sides of the frame except for the flat top which is about 1/2 inch wide on each side. The sides of the frame, including the portions with the oval pattern and the flat tops are finished in a dull brownish gold color . The condition of the frame is good. The is one quite small nick on the top flat 1/2 inch portion of the frame about 2 inches in from the right side. That nick is along the bottom edge of the top 1/2 inch portion and most viewers will not notice it from a normal viewing distance. The other slight flaw present on the frame is along the outermost right side edge of the flat 1/2 inch final part of the part of the frame for a length of perhaps 1 inch in the upper right outside corner of the frame. Although that loss of surface finish is visible, most people will have their attention drawn to the blue of the water and white clouds in the painting and not to that minor dull brownish gold color surface finish loss on the outer frame edge.
This painting will go well in a sophisticated residence, especially along a coastline, or in a professional office. It conveys a dramatic sense of sailing on an open sea and therefore also may appeal to collectors or ship paintings.
